Requesting Care with NurtureCare

Who does NurtureCare care for?
NurtureCare provides care for children and young people with complex health needs across the East Midlands, including Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Lincolnshire.

How do I get care with NC?
There are many options to get care including: personal health budget / direct payment, self-referral, apply for funding through your local Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) or through litigation.

Do I have to pay for my own care?
If you are self-referring, on personal health budget or direct payment, you will have to pay for the care yourself. However, in the latter you will given the funds for this from the CCG.

If your care is being commissioned by the CCG or through litigation, you won’t be paying for your care, those agencies will pay NC directly for your care.

How do I get care with NC?

Where is the care provided?
Care is usually provided at the child’s home, but occasionally we are asked to provide care in school, short break settings and hospital.

What age do you care for?
NC is unique in that we care exclusively for children and young people. We care for children from birth, right through to when they transition into adult care (0 – 29 years).

What conditions do you care for?
We care for a wide range of complex health needs in children and young people across the East Midlands and can range from behavioural conditions, severe physical impairment and end of life service users. Please explore the Care section of our website to find out more.

What hours can NC provide?
NurtureCare can provide 24/7 care and is available 365 days a year. We are able to provide more than one carer on a shift. Please note our minimum shift is two hours. We can provide care for less than 2 hours but you will be billed for two hours.

Care Delivery

Who will care for my child?
NurtureCare will provide Level 1, 2 or 3 carers, or specialist children’s nurses, dependent on the level of care required. All staff will have gone through our rigorous recruitment process, have a valid DBS (criminal) check, and will have been trained sufficiently to be deemed competent to care for your child.

Will I have input or choice into who is selected to care for my child?
Absolutely – we understand that each family dynamic is different. This is why we involve our service users in our recruitment process, and profile match our carers with our service users. We will only select carers and nurses who fit your profile to care for your child.

What happens if I wish to change a carer?
If for what ever reason you wish to change a carer, all you have to do is let our admin team know and we can begin making adjustments.

What happens if I want to change the time of my care shifts?
We will always try to accommodate a change where possible, providing we have been given sufficient notice. We may be able to swap some of your hours around to accommodate, or you may be able to make the necessary arrangements with whoever is commissioning your care.

Will I have visitors apart from the carers?
You will be told if there will be any additional people attending a shift in advanced. Such people may include clinical educators attending to do some training for your child, carers attending to shadow an experienced carer for training or assessment nurses.

How will I know who is coming to care for my child?
NurtureCare have invested in a robust cloud based shift management platform that helps our staff stay on top of their rota and any further opportunities, and also you as service users. You are able to log into your secure dashboard and see a schedule of who is coming to your upcoming shifts.

How do I cancel a shift?
If you wish to cancel a shift, you can simply call our office during office hours, or our on-call nurse to let us know. We require at least 24 hours’ notice, failure to give appropriate notice may mean NurtureCare will still charge for the shift.

Can I add additional hours of care for special occasions?
NurtureCare will always try to accommodate you and provide a flexible service where possible. If you need to increase the hours of care for a special occasion, we may look at moving your existing hours to accommodate, or making special arrangements with your commissioning group.

Working with NurtureCare

How do I apply to work for NurtureCare?
Applying to work for NC is very easy. Simply head over to our Careers website to see and apply for our available opportunities online.

What hours are available?
We have care packages in Nottinghamshire and surrounding counties. Numerous shifts are available, which tend to be early morning, afternoons, evenings and nights including weekends. Carers are consulted regarding the hours of shifts.

What are the rates of pay?

What training opportunities are available?
All carers will need to be signed off by our team of Clinical Educator’s as competent for each child they are matched to. We have a robust training and induction programme which includes some mandatory training and yearly refresher workshops. We have also opened a Children’s Healthcare Training Academy which our staff benefit from, as well as external agencies.

Are there career development opportunities with NurtureCare?
Yes – we have three levels of carers, each increasing in salary and responsibilities. We actively encourage and train all carers who have the potential to reach level three.

What qualifications are required to work with NurtureCare?
Ideally we would like candidates to have NVQ Level 2 and/or Level 3 in Health and Social Care, with experience of caring for children. However, at entry level, candidates are assessed individually.

How does the recruitment process work?
We have tried to make our recruitment process as easy and transparent as possible. You start by completing an online application for, either on our Careers website or via a third-party job board. Your application will be screened and if you are deemed suitable, you will be invited for a face-to-face interview to give you the opportunity to meet our team, ask us any questions you have, and vice versa.

At interview, you will be asked to bring certain identification documents which will be explained in your interview email.

If you are successful at interview, we will seek satisfactory references and an enhanced DBS check. This is usually one of the biggest delays in the process while we await the results from these external parties.

Once satisfactory results have been received, you will be formally offered a role with NurtureCare and be invited for induction and training, and then begin the meet and greet process to pair you with suitable service users. You will also complete some online forms such as a medical questionnaire.

Will I be required to wear a uniform?
Yes, all care staff are required to wear a NurtureCare polo shirt.

Will I be required to have a current DBS check?
Yes, as you will be working with vulnerable children and young people, you are required to have an enhanced DBS check as part of the recruitment process. NurtureCare will make a contribution towards your DBS check, however you are expected to make payment of £44 towards your DBS check. We do not receive a copy of your DBS, it is sent straight to your address which you specify on your application. You are expected to share the original copy with NurtureCare. If there is anything you wish to disclose or discuss with us prior to applying for your DBS, you can contact our head office and speak with our recruitment lead Pam.

Complaints, Feedback and Policies

What happens if I wish to make a complaint?
We take complaints and feedback very seriously and handle all matters in the strictest of confidence. Please read our Complaints Policy, which outlines how to make a complaint and how your complaint will be handled.

How I report any concerns?
If you have any concerns, you can discuss these with the on-call nurse at any time. These will be handled in a professional and confidential manner. Your concern may be escalated, or another course of action may be deemed necessary once NurtureCare has done the appropriate investigations.

How do I give positive feedback?
We welcome all feedback and are in regular dialogue with our service users. This helps us gather their insight into what’s working well and what needs improving. If you wish to provide feedback, you can email, call, or write to us, or discuss with your NurtureCare appointed lead.
